With Betsy DeVos’ confirmation as secretary of education, the Department of Education is creating a new online education portal to help students find, access, and explore new online learning opportunities.
DeVos is the former CEO of the Trump administration’s Department of Labor, and her new job will focus on expanding opportunities for educators to provide educational content online.
“We are thrilled to welcome Betsy DeVos as our next secretary of Education,” said Tom O’Brien, CEO of Polygon, in a statement.
“Her record of leadership and dedication to making our education system the best it can be has been well-documented in her time in government.
With the appointment of this outstanding candidate, we will continue to support educators as they continue to create the world’s most effective and accessible learning experience.”
O’Brien added that the new portal will bring “access to high quality online content, resources, and services, including video tutorials, educational games, and other educational content from the most diverse collection of leading brands and providers” available on the internet today.
The portal will be powered by Polygon and will be available to all students who want to access it.
It will include “a searchable library of top education and career sites, including Coursera, Khan Academy, Udacity, and Udacity Learning Academy,” the announcement said.
“Betsy DeVos has an enviable record of creating lasting change for educators and students across the nation.
We are confident that this new portal and our team will continue this important work in a way that makes learning accessible and relevant for students,” said Jeff Shesko, VP and general manager of Education at Courseras Learning, in the announcement.
Shesko noted that the portal will include a searchable database of “top education and job sites,” which will allow educators to search through content and find a listing of their peers and employers.
He added that Courserassources, Courserateams, Courses, Coursumess, Cours, Courstoday, Courtes, Courssource, and Coursesources will be accessible to students, with “a curated search engine, plus a dedicated landing page.”
Omnicom Group, the parent company of Courserams Learning Academy, has also been added to the portal.
“This portal will give teachers, teachers assistants, and administrators access to the most up-to-date content, tools, and resources, so they can leverage the knowledge and skills they gain online,” Sheska added.
“We believe that teachers, who are the lifeblood of our communities, deserve to have access to these resources on their mobile devices, and this portal is the latest in a long line of efforts to make that happen.”
The portal is also expected to include “high quality video tutorials” from Courseracast, Courskills, Courscast, and the Coursesource channel.
